Advantages and Challenges of a Business Opportunity

BUSINESS START-UP GUIDE

Thinking of owning your own business? Do you want to be a success? If so, then there is a lot to recommend looking into a business opportunity. What is a business opportunity? Simply put, it is the acquisition of a business package that is earmarked for success. You pay them money, and they hand over the keys the "shop" - whether it is a grocery store, online marketing endeavor, clothing retailer, restaurant or any one of a number of possible business opportunities out there today.

But before delving into the purchase of a business opportunity, it would be a good idea for you to carefully consider the advantages of this type of option by weighing it against the inherent challenges.

First of all, when looking at the great features that a prospective investor like you can get out of a business opportunity, it is important to point out that taking this route is probably one of the most inexpensive things you can do. That's because unlike franchises, business opportunities cost a great deal less. Why? A lot of it has to do with the brand name factor. What this means is that a lot of what you pay for in a franchise has to do with the name.

And so, as it turns out, there is an important reason why a business opportunity carries a lower price. A good example of this can be found in the choice recently faced by one investor, who found himself on the fence between going for a major franchise burger and fries restaurant and a small mom and pop operation in the form of a business opportunity. A factor that weighed heavily in his decision making was the fact that a large portion of potential customers to the business opportunity (the mom and pop outfit) would be diverted over to the franchise because of one important feature - its name.

That's right; while the quality of food was lower in the franchise, it still attracted more customers due to the world-wide advertising campaigns that had given them the familiarity that they would ultimately rely on when it came time to sit down and eat.

Yet another great advantage of choosing the business opportunity is the amount of direct influence you will be able to have over where the business goes in the future. While franchisees are limited in the way that they can shape marketing policy, the business opportunity owner will virtually have total control over how the operation is run.

In addition to this complete managerial control, the business opportunity can be relied on for a well-executed handover that involves - ideally - a seamless period of transition in which the new owner and his or her staff are trained and prepped so that the best chances for operational success are secured.

This ties into the benefit of a greatly reduced risk that is involved when choosing the business opportunity over the business startup; with a known financial and operational track record in front of you, you know what you are getting into when you purchase the business opportunity.

Yet given the fact that business opportunities often lack the large networking systems that name recognition that franchises can boast of, it may even be hard to find the right business opportunity for you. Dealing with the individualized - and sometimes quirky - nature of each small business opportunity that you looking buying can at times lead to inefficiency in the search process. Also, be sure to take a good look at what you are getting into before you buy it - there could be leftover pitfalls with your business opportunity that would lead to more trouble in the future.
